Problem:

Most propellers have a fixed pitch and are designed and fitted to operate within the ideal RPM range of a boat when running at wide-open throttle (WOT).   For conditions other than the rated WOT RPM, or conditions were loading fluctuates, the propeller does not operate efficiently, there is more torque available than the propeller using.

When the motor RPM is too low the boat will be under-propped/pitched causing less resistance. When the RPM is too high the boat becomes over-propped/pitched causing excess resistance.   These conditions are outside the sweet spot of efficiency and therefore cost the boat owner more wear on the engine and more fuel consumption.

Solution:

We designed a variable pitch propeller that changes pitch based on engine data monitoring. We correlate engine RPM, boat speed, and compute the optimum pitch for the operating conditions.  Our custom algorithms closely follow the engine output torque curves so no torque is wasted and no additional fuel is wasted.  

By varying the propeller blades to the optimal pitch, higher efficiency can be achieved.  This results in no wasted torque, provides more thrust, more acceleration and an estimated 18.5% savings in the amount of fuel used.  

Innovation:

Reverse thrust and braking:

Our propeller allows you to set the pitch of the propeller to a negative value very quickly without decelerating the engine or changing gear. This provides reverse thrust and very short braking distance which can improve safety and help avoid collisions.

High maneuverability:

Because our propeller can provide you with forward and reverse thrust instantaneously you have very high maneuverability, and can make tighter turns and navigate obstacles more effectively.

Energy efficient:

The servo actuators for our propeller use very little electric power as little as 40 watts.  The actuators are self-locking so when the actuator is not adjusting pitch it stays locked and the propeller pitch stay locked without any power input.

Strong construction:

The propeller is built out marine grade stainless steel.  Exhaustive FEA analysis has been carried out on the propeller blades, hub, pitch mechanism and actuators to ensure a proper safety factor.
