Pedal Drive System
Problem :
Kayaks and canoes are popular for getting on the water for sport or leisure. They require human power in the form of paddling or rowing and this can be exhausting and difficult. An alternative solution to human power such as pedaling would provide a second option. Having a system that could easily be retrofitted to an existing kayak or canoe would allow for a quick upgrade with massive benefits.
Solution :
We worked with the inventor of the “spin fin” to modify his existing design and make a more portable version. The system has two major components, the pedal drive mechanism and the propeller module.
Innovation :
The system is designed to install on your existing boat without any modification to the hull.
Specifications :
- The pedal drive system has a 1:9 gear ratio. For every complete revolution of your pedal you get 9 revolutions on the output propeller. This gives you a large amount of thrust and frees your hands to do the steering and other tasks.
- The pedal drive mechanism consists of foot pedals with mechanical links to transmit the torque to the propeller module through a chain and sprocket pair.
- The propeller module is made of nylon with stainless steel shaft and gears.
- The propeller is ducted so it’s more efficient and also less prone to damage in shallow waters.
